Content Generator Best Practices

Ocelot's ChatGPT-powered content generator tool allows clients to create, edit, and update virtual assistant question responses faster and more efficiently, and to use content scraped from your website with your custom web knowledge sources in the writing of this content. The purpose of this article is to help you use the content generator most effectively. To help you navigate this article we have broken it down into the following sections:

Editing Existing Responses and Creating New Responses

When using the content generator to edit an existing response, you can choose to utilize the existing response as a starting point for the tool to enhance, allow the tool to create an entirely new response using the ChatGPT-3.5 Turbo data training set, or use content scraped from your website with your custom web knowledge sources.

Note: The ChatGPT-3.5 Turbo uses a large non-institution-specific dataset containing nearly 500 billion tokens. Due to its fixed dataset, ChatGPT has limited knowledge of events that occurred after September 2021.

Using the existing response as a starting point for the content generator tool to edit can be a good choice for content about policies, procedures, and events that have not changed significantly since the last time the response was edited, but should still be reviewed on a regular basis.

Using the ChatGPT-3.5 Turbo data training set, or using content scraped from your website with your custom web knowledge sources to create an entirely new response, can be a good choice for content that has changed significantly since the last time the response was edited, or for content where the existing response is too brief or vague. Using this option saves content editors significant time in searching multiple sources in order to create response content.

Note: ChatGPT sometimes writes nonsensical content, or content that seems plausible but is not correct. Responses written by the content generator tool should always be checked for sensibility and accuracy, including the accuracy of any included contact information or links.

When creating a completely new general library override or custom question, you can use the content generator tool to generate the initial response quickly and efficiently, reducing the amount of time human content editors must spend writing, and enabling the launch of more content faster.

Best Practice: Consider responses written by the content generator tool as a first draft. Proofread and iterate on these responses to ensure they accurately reflect your practices and policies.

Verbosity and Creativity

Within the content generator tool, there are customizable parameter options for verbosity and creativity:

  • Verbosity affects the length of the AI-generated response, and is measured on a scale from concise (shorter) to wordy (longer).
    • Concise responses are most helpful for questions having simple, straightforward answers.
    • Wordy responses are most helpful for questions with more complex or nuanced answers, or those about processes with multiple steps.
  • Creativity affects the originality of the AI-generated response, and is measured on a scale from lower (more predictable) to higher (more imaginative).
    • Lower creativity responses are most helpful for questions requiring a high degree of specificity or having limited flexibility, such as those about financial aid policies and procedures.
    • Higher creativity responses are most helpful for questions about culture and personality, such as those about student life or visit programs.

Writing Effective Questions

Crafting good questions plays a crucial role in the responses the content generator tool writes, because the question provides the basic instructions that communicate what you're looking for in that response. Rephrasing your question, adding or removing details, and even misspellings or missing words can significantly impact responses from the content generator tool.

Successful questions are complete sentences including a noun and a verb, are direct and concise, and avoid acronyms or jargon that could have multiple meanings to different audiences.

For more information about creating good questions, review the Creating and Editing a Knowledge Base Question article.

Variables

Responses written by the content generator tool may include contact information or links from your website. In order to more efficiently maintain your content, consider replacing these pieces of information with a variable that can be updated globally from within the client admin portal, instead of needing to be updated on a per-response basis if that information changes.

For more information about using variables within a response, review the Variables section of the Creating a Knowledge Base Response article.

Web Knowledge Source Content

If your web knowledge sources have been configured, you can choose to have the content generator tool use and prioritize content scraped from your website, by your custom web knowledge sources, when generating a response. By default, this parameter is toggled on when you select the content generator tool.

For more information about how the content generator tool uses content scraped from your website to generate responses, review the Content Generator section of the Creating a Knowledge Base Response article.

Because the content generator tool cannot evaluate the accuracy of the information available on webpages included in the web knowledge sources, it is important to maintain any webpages included in your custom web knowledge sources with up-to-date information and to unpublish or archive any outdated webpages.
